CAMEROON LOSSES 18 BILLION FCFA IN 2020 ACCORDING TO THE RECENT ANTI-CORRUPTION REPORT RELEASED BY CONAC

On September 23, 2021, the National Anti-Corruption Commission (CONAC) issued a report.

Dr. Dieudonné Massi Gams, the head of CONAC, estimates that the whole financial harm to the state as a result of corruption and related crimes is about 17.6 billion CFAF (close to 18 billion CFAF).

In-depth examination of CONAC's efforts in 2020

While activity decreased as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no violations of public property and governance in Cameroon in 2020. In addition to CONAC's regular public awareness efforts and microprogrammes broadcast on radio and television, the Commission collected complaints and conducted investigations

The complaints filed

A toll-free number provided by CONAC (called 1517) received 12,675 calls in 2020, but 17,350 in 2019. This is a 26.94% reduction. about two thousand of the calls were connected to corruption.

A recent research found that the majority of the calls dealt with the following:

  • Road transport sub sector (17%)

  • Land administration (14.60%)

  • Law and order (13.60%)

  • Finance (12.60%)

  • Justice (11.30%).

    In addition, many additional complaints were filed with the Commission in 2020, including instances involving:

  • Corruption in the choice of Moroccan candidates for scholarship in the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training;

  • Duty desertion and illegal collection of salary by numerous GHS Elig Essono trainers in Yaoundé.

  • Ngaoundere's medium-sized enterprises taxation centre

    Just to name a few instances. Inspite of the COVID 19 Pandemic and the insecurities in the NOSO which very much cripples the nation’s economy, Corruption is still very much present in our society.
